hiding it in other foods that are perceived to appeal to kids (ie ground up broccoli in brownies, carrots in applesauce or waffle mix). I say don’t do it! We believe kids will learn to eat (and enjoy) healthy fruits and vegetables in their purest form if given the time and patience to try them. While your children are young in those precious toddler years, their taste buds are forming. This is prime time to let them learn the delicious natural taste of carrots, broccoli, green beans, beets, sweet potatoes….all these nutrient dense foods just waiting for them to try. Yes you might have days of frustration of having them refuse to eat them but it often takes multiple tries (up to 14 times per my kids’ first pediatrician) for them to learn to enjoy the food. Its just like teaching them good sleeping habits, how to ride a bike, how to use the bathroom. Eating healthy is also a learned (and so necessary) skill. Hiding healthy whole foods in other more processed foods only sets you up for the dreaded picky eater syndrome since they never learned to eat food in its original form when they were young. If you have ever talked to a parent of a picky eater, it gets much much harder when they get older. Its not so easy to send “sneaky” foods in lunch boxes and is much harder to cook 2 dinners each night (one for mom and dad and one for your picky eater), especially when your kids are involved in activities. It can also create stress going to friends for dinner when your 10 year old will only eat 5 possible foods, resulting in the need to bring along a separate meal for your child who “will only eat this”. Ask anyone that has gone through this: its the pits. So check out the article for some ideas for easy dinners you can make for BOTH the adults and the little ones.
